The digital nomad visa (DNV) lets you live in Spain while working remotely for companies or clients outside Spain. In 2026 it requires a minimum income of €2,849 per month, proof of qualifications or 3 years' experience, and at least 3 months' history with your employer or clients. Filed from within Spain, it grants a residence permit of up to 3 years.
It fits remote employees of foreign companies and freelancers with an international client base — including couples and families relocating together. It does not fit you if most of your income comes from Spanish clients: Spanish-sourced work is capped at 20% of your activity.

What the UGE will ask of you
Minimum income of €2,849/month
(200% of Spain's 2026 minimum wage), proven through your contract, recurring invoices or bank statements. Higher thresholds apply when you include family members.
Remote work for non-Spanish companies or clients.
At most 20% of your income may come from Spanish clients.
Professional relationship of at least 3 months
With your employer or clients before applying; the company must have been operating for at least 1 year.
Qualifications
A university degree, or at least 3 years of professional experience in your field.
Social security coverage
A certificate of coverage from your home country (where a treaty exists — the US and UK both have one) or registration as self-employed (autónomo) in Spain. This is the requirement that sinks more applications than any other; we resolve it before filing.
Clean criminal record (last 5 years) and health coverage.
2026 tightening: the UGE now checks contract, income and social security coverage for consistency, document by document. "Probably fine" no longer is.
